Uniqueness

An unimaginative derivative of Basic English, replacing all words not of Anglo-Saxon origin.

The following lists do not give equivalents for the non-Anglo-Saxon words, but they do identify which words those are.

Of the 850 words in the Basic list, 517 are AS, 323 [38%] are non-AS, 8 are mostly AS or are pre-AS borrowings from Latin, and 2 are ambiguous.

While I believe it is possible to find native English equivalents (or near equivalents) for the 323 non-AS words, I think it would be very difficult to do.

In the following I use "s" for AS, "r" for Romance (but actually it's all non-AS), and "s+" for the 8 mostly AS.

The two ambiguous words are: sound (healthy s; audio r) pen (corral s; writing r)

The 8 s+ words are: chalk, pocket, reward, soup, sponge, ticket, waste, wine.

The 517 s words: a, about, across, after, again, against, all, almost, among, and, angry, answer, ant, any, apple, arm, as, at, awake, baby, back, bad, bag, ball, band, basket, bath, be, bed, bee, before, belief, bell, bent, berry, between, bird, birth, bit, bite, bitter, black, blade, blood, blow, blue, board, boat, body, boiling, bone, book, boot, bottle, box, boy, brain, brake, brass, bread, breath, brick, bridge, bright, broken, brother, brown, bucket, building, burn, burst, business, but, butter, by, cake, cart, cat, cheap, cheese, chest, chin, church, clean, clock, cloth, cloud, coal, coat, cold, collar, comb, come, cook, copper, cork, cough, cover, cow, crack, crush, cup, cut, dark, daughter, day, dead, dear, death, deep, dirty, do, dog, door, down, drain, drawer, drink, driving, drop, dry, dust, ear, early, earth, east, edge, egg, end, enough, even, ever, every, eye, fall, false, far, farm, fat, father, fear, feather, feeling, field, fight, finger, fire, first, fish, fixed, flag, flat, flight, floor, fly, fold, food, foolish, foot, for, fork, forward, fowl, free, friend, from, front, full, get, girl, give, glass, glove, go, goat, gold, good, grass, great, green, grey/gray, grip, growth, gun, hair, hammer, hand, hanging, happy, harbor, hard, hat, hate, have, he, head, healthy, hearing, heart, heat, help, here, high, hole, hollow, hook, hope, horn, horse, house, how, I, ice, if, ill, in, ink, iron, island, judge, jump, keep, kettle, key, kick, kind, kiss, knee, knife, knot, knowledge, land, last, late, laugh, law, lead, leaf, learning, leather, left, leg, let, lift, light, like, linen, lip, little, living, lock, long, look, loose, loss, loud, love, low, make, man, mark, market, match, may, meal, meat, meeting, middle, milk, mind, mist, mixed, month, moon, morning, mother, mouth, much, nail, name, narrow, near, neck, need, needle, net, new, news, night, no, north, nose, not, now, nut, of, off, offer, oil, old, on, only, open, or, other, out, oven, over, owner, past, pig, pin, plant, play, plough/plow, pot, power, pull, push, put, quick, quite, rain, rat, reading, ready, red, rest, rice, right, ring, river, road, rod, roof, room, root, rough, round, rub, run, sad, safe, sail, salt, same, sand, say, screw, sea, seat, see, seed, seem, self, send, shade, shake, shame, sharp, sheep, shelf, ship, shirt, shoe, short, shut, side, silk, silver, sister, skin, skirt, sky, sleep, slip, slope, slow, small, smash, smell, smile, smoke, smooth, snake, sneeze, snow, so, soap, sock, soft, some, son, song, south, spade, spoon, spring, stamp, star, start, steam, stem, step, stick, sticky, stiff, still, stitch, stocking, stone, stop, straight, stretch, strong, such, sudden, summer, sun, sweet, swim, tail, take, talk, tall, taste, teaching, than, that, the, then, there, thick, thin, thing, this, though, thought, thread, throat, through, thumb, thunder, tight, till, time, tin, tired, to, toe, together, tomorrow, tongue, tooth, top, town, trade, tray, tree, trick, true, turn, twist, under, up, very, view, waiting, walk, wall, war, warm, wash, watch, water, wave, wax, way, weather, week, weight, well, west, wet, wheel, when, where, while, whip, whistle, white, who, why, wide, will, wind, window, wing, winter, wire, wise, with, woman, wood, wool, word, work, worm, wound, writing, wrong, year, yellow, yes, yesterday, you, young.
