Old Hepic ( Old Hepic:Hǣpisk ) is an early form of the Hepic language that was spoken in northern Normandy between the fifth and ninth centuries. It is a West Germanic language and as such is closely related to Old English and Old Frisian.

The fictional history of the people that speak this language places them in Northern Germany before the migration of Anglo-Saxons to England. The Hepes joined the migration but on the way to England, they sailed further south and landed on the Cotentin in Normandy.

Language Sources

The main source is Proto-Germanic. Word formation is inspired by all Germanic languages, but Old English, Old Frisian, and Old Saxon in particular. Because the Anglo-Saxon invasions have driven Celtic groups to northern France, some Celtic influence is seen. Vulgar Latin/Early Old French is also seen influencing the language as the Romance speakers expand towards the North. Invading Norsemen will also have a profound impact on the language

Inspiration for the language's creation is from following Firðiskt. Sounds and pronunciation is based on General American English. The idea behind this is that there should be no sounds in the language that the creator cannot easily pronounce.

The orthography, at present, is very mechanical and looks awkward. The purpose it serves is that of pronunciation as well as determining the date of when sound changes occurred. This will hopefully be fixed when the creator becomes more imaginative.
